4 Tips To A Rocking Resume

4 Tips To A Rocking Resume

Writing a resume can be overwhelming. What should it look like? Should I add a picture? What sections should go where? How can I make mine stand out from others? Can something I did while in high school relevant?

There are so many questions that arise and I want to give you some basic do’s and don'ts that you can walk away with to help ease your mind and feel more prepared about tackling your resume.

Don’t think of yourself as a poor student who desperately needs this job who has no work experience because they are just a student. Flip the script. Switch your mindset. Think of all the awesome skills you have learned and developed while in nursing school. From iv insertion, drains, trachs, to understanding lab values, developing time management skills and therapeutic communication. These are all skills that you have, yes they were acquired in nursing school but they are still your skills and can be added to your resume.

Don’t add a picture of yourself. Adding a picture can be an HR nightmare. Usually when people from HR see resumes with a photo of the potential employee they will immediately toss it in the no pile because they don't want anyone being able to say they got the job or didn't get the job because of how they looked. So do yourself a favor and skip the selfie.

Do use color if you find it fitting. This doesn't mean to go crazy with neons and make it multi-colored, but an idea would be to research what colors the hospital you are applying to uses. If you notice burgundy is used a lot on their website then maybe you can add a dark burgundy line to separate your sections. It can subliminally make you more appealing to the person reading the resumes.

Do think back to all you have done in your life and see what experiences you can spin into working well for your nursing resume. For example: if you were on the cheer team, you can add that you were captain (which shows leadership) or that you placed in tournaments, which shows commitment and good work ethic. This also shows that you are a team player and that you get along with others which is always a plus.
